All names of respondents in this report are pseudonyms. To supplement in-depth interviews, we also conducted participant observation research at a variety of religious and secular community activities and other Israeli settings such as parties, restaurants, Israelioriented synagogues, schools, youth programs, shops and the pool of a San Fernando Valley apartment complex with many Israeli residents. We visited numerous meetings of communal organizations in Los Angeles and London as well as Yom Hatzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) festivals in Los Angeles and Detroit.

It was a class of about 38 students. We were only six students in my school. I was the most advanced student in my class. And so I was put in a very bad position because I didn’t know how to assimilate. I could not break that cohesiveness that they had and I could not be with the students I grew up with either. I was trapped between the two worlds and I really had a rough time. I think all my junior high was bad. Academically, in the beginning I made a big drop in my achievements. And then I caught up and it was all right.

Scholars informed by these new understandings of the complexity of migrants’ motives have not jettisoned established models. Rather, recent and established approaches have generally been synthesized, so that contemporary scholarship on migration addresses both traditional concerns – such as the economic incentives for migration – as well as more contemporary topics, including the ways in which subjective, contextual, cultural, and identificational issues are implicated as people cross national borders.
